I went in his room to wake him to go potty and discovered his lips were all swollen and blistered looking. He was scratching madly at his arms and neck, and his face was red. His breathing seemed rather wheezy so I gave him a treatment and a teaspoon of Benadryl, waited a half hour, and saw that all the above symptoms were gone as quickly as they had appeared.
Now I am puzzled. He did not have anything new last night. He has had a runny nose getting progressively worse over the past 2 days. I also caught him chewing his tongue for the past 2 days but thought it was due to a cold. However, I know his lips would not be swollen like they were last night with sickness.
This was a classic allergic reaction, but to what? Could it be a reaction had been building for a couple days and just got bad enough to see last night? What has he eaten new over the past 3 days? One would think that I would be so alert to what my child was eating because he has food allergies. The thing is, I know what he is allergic too, and I know that there have not been any mistakes, so why would I be writing down what he ate?
This is so frustrating. When Damian had his allergy testing the first time, it came up as not allergic to anything. The second time he was tested because they were sure it was a false negative, he tested positive to dairy and nothing else. So now what? Obviously, allergy testing isn’t fool proof.
Lately it seems Damian has had an increasing number of reactions. Of course this is all taking place a month before his birthday party so I can look forward to being a wreck in the days following the party. This is very frustrating. My poor baby is having issues and I can’t help him without using him as a Guinea Pig.
Anyway, I just thought this was a good opportunity to share the trials of food allergies with everyone. I will keep you posted on what is going on.
